I had learned before about not using a dictionary. It kills me not to use a dictionary. As a math teacher, I am always looling for the most efficient way to solve a problem, and not using a dictionary seems so inefficient. I agree it is not the best way to learn new vocabulary. However, if you are using it to find the definition of a specialized terminology and then using that definition to solve a problem, then looling up a term in a dictionary would seem like the appropriate solution.

I especially liked the part about helping students to interpret the directions given on standardized tests. It is eye-opening to realize they often do not quite "get" the meanings of the words like describe, analyze, ponder, determine, and even tell. I have tried to work with students on one or two of those terms to help them form a "testing toolkit." Hopefully if several teachers work with students on developing confidence with the testing terms, our students will do better on those tests, whether the subject area is math, reading, grammar, social studies, science, or other areas.
