The root cause of language deficiency that I see most often was not listed in the reading. Many, if not most of my students, simply do not care. They do not see the importance of school, and they do apply themselves. The communicate with text messages that make English teachers cringe, and they see that as effective communication.

I see the lack of comprehension of basic text and testing vocabulary. I also find that many of my students have started school with a lower number of words known, and that deficiency follows them all the way through their schooling and life. They can never gain enough words to put them "on par" with their more verbal classmates. This situation highlights the importance of reading to children during the preschool years and giving adequate funding to early childhood and preschool programming so that all students enter kindergarten with a similar amount of words known.
